The player must explore the worlds called Kingdoms, fight enemies, and defeat them to earn points while immersing himself in open-ended gameplay experience. According to the story, the antagonist plans to marry with Princess Peace. The game allows the player assumes the role of the protagonist, named as Mario, and travel around many worlds using his hat-shaped ship known as the Odyssey to rescue the Princess Peach from the custody of antagonist named Bowser. As the installment in the series of Super Mario, the game brings back the exploration and open world gameplay previous featured in Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario 64.
